The Audiobook Market Is Booming!
It has grown from a publishing industry side hustle into a huge global business.
Digital audiobooks continue to be the fastest growing segment in publishing and have overtaken ebooks. That was before the Covid-19 pandemic and global lockdowns. The impact on audio book sales from the recent changes to most of our behaviour since Coronavirus hit, will be huge. Audiobooks provide a wonderful solace for many of us. We listen during gaps in our learning schedules, whilst off work during furlough or in order to relax for a few hours after a busy, difficult day.
The industry will be worth £157 million in 2020-21 – an increase of 25.3% from 2019-20. (IBISWorld)
The global audiobooks market size was valued at USD 2.67 billion in 2019 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24.4% from 2020 to 2027. In the US, audiobook downloads generate revenue of close to a billion dollars annually.
The Importance Of Stories
Hearing stories, read well, provides a welcome distraction from current events that may otherwise cause anxiety.
At the beginning of 2020, 1 in 6 (16.3%) children and young people aged 9 to 18 said that they listen to audiobooks. During lockdown that increased to nearly 1 in 4 (23.4%). The benefits of listening to audiobooks increased their interest in reading, writing and they used their imagination more than when they watched videos. 1 in 3 (31.8%) children and young people said that listening to audiobooks made them feel better during lockdown.
The Audiobook industry generated a new listener.
The average audiobook user is not your usual book buying type. They are affluent men, aged between 18 and 34 years old, who now listen to at least four audiobooks every 12 months. Great for entertainment and brain stimulation while working, commuting and running outdoors.
